Dusty Springfield, la cantante británica de pop soul, es la figura reconocida por Google en su Doodle a raíz de que un 8 de noviembre, como hoy, ella sacó su primer disco solista.

Mary Isabel Catherine Bernadette O'Brien, más conocida como Dusty Springfield, nació en Hampstead, Londres, un 16 de abril de 1939. Sus primeros pasos en la música los inició en 1959 cuando formó un grupo vocal femenino llamado The Lana Sisters.

Luego, creó un grupo de folk llamado The Springfields junto a su hermano Dion y a Tim Field y allí es donde surgió su nombre artístico: Dusty Springfield. Rápidamente lograron popularidad en Estados Unidos por canciones como Silver Threads and Golden Needless, Island of Dreams o Bambino.

Durante la década de 1960, Dusty Springfield fue una referente del Swinging London y un icono por el movimiento mod. Para los comienzos de los ’70, fue una referente del lesbianismo, primero develando su bisexualidad, para después identificarse como lesbiana. Una de sus parejas más reconocidas fue la que tuvo con la tenista Billie Jean King.

Durante el resto de los años 1970 y la primera mitad de los ‘80, Dusty Springfield siguió grabando algunos discos, aunque sin la calidad de sus mejores tiempos. Tuvo un resurgimiento en 1987, cuando se juntó con los Pet Shop Boys, uno de los grupos más populares del momento, e hicieron What Have I Done to Deserve This, canción que alcanzó el segundo puesto en las listas del Reino Unido.

En enero de 1994, mientras grababa su anteúltimo álbum, comenzó a sentirse enferma. Cuando regresó a Inglaterra unos meses después, sus médicos le diagnosticaron cáncer de mama. Recibió meses de quimioterapia y radioterapia y, en principio, la enfermedad había retrocedido. Al año siguiente, ya con mejor salud, Dusty Springfield se dedicó a promocionar el álbum, que se publicó ese año. A mediados de 1996 el cáncer había vuelto, y a pesar de los intensos tratamientos murió en Henley-on-Thames, Oxfordshire el 2 de marzo de 1999.
